Fixation of carbon dioxide by coral

Fixation of carbon dioxide by coral

It is a proposal to fix carbon dioxide by coral.

As the number of corals increases, the sea becomes more diverse and colorful. The number of fishes and reef creatures will increase, and it coral reef will serve as food source and for humans.

Many researchers thought that coral reefs were a source of carbon dioxide, but it was finally found that coral can fixed carbon dioxide.

This photo is a coral farm established at a depth of 16m. With proper management, we could grow corals that can grow even at a depth of 20m.

There are many shallow waters in the world where we can be grow corals.

Growing corals can also help to mitigate the increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, so will be positive for reducing global warming.

The fish species on live of the coral farm

The fish species on coral farm.

There are many fish species that live at the coral farm in the harbor.

In this harbor, there were few fish species, but after 10 years of coral farming it widely changed and plenty of fishes can be found.

When we promote corals to grow, the number and diversity of fish species will rapidly increase.

For example, an ecosystem with barracuda at the top predator has been created in the harbor.

I didn't happen to be able to take a picture of this Barracuda.

It lives in a floating pier in the harbor where I am growing corals.

If there is no coral, it is a place where there are not even small fishes such as damselfish.

Hanging gardens of corals

Hanging gardens of corals

This coral farming method is very original. The method has been patented by Sunao Uehara in 1998.

The advantage of this method is that it prevents the negative effect of coral feeders as "starfish and seashell".

I wish, you will understand it.

transplantation coral in the Onna village

This photo shows the condition of coral farm after the second year of coral transplantation. Almost 100% of the corals are transplanted corals.

We have accumulated a lot of experience in transplantation technique.

Transplanted corals do not die easily.

  1. If coral die, there is always a cause.
  2. 2. Coral transplantation is a very good tool for coral reef regeneration.

Man made bred nursery facility

The coral transplantation is effective in restoring coral reefs.

It is necessary to supply a large number of seedlings for widespread transplantation.

Fixing corals on the seedbed technique:

Technique-1 "Concrete nail use technique"

The transplanted corals in Onna village.

It is a method that use concrete nails to be pinned on the rocks and the corals are fixed on it.

It costs less than using an underwater bond but this technique requires a lot of human hard power.

Technique-2 "Underwater bond use technique"

Coral fixed by underwater bond

The underwater bond can be used in any rocky area.

Even rocks in a vertical slope can be used for transplantation if the diver get used to it.

Technique-3 "Tree branch structure to be used the coral raising" My recommendation

Tree branch structure to be used the coral raising.

Tree branch structure can be used like shown in this photo.

In this case it is not necessary to remove predators.

This structure offers you, a good and cheap coral growing technique with few human working time for maintenance .

Two patents belonging to Suno Uehara are used based this structure.

Oodo Beach Guidebook

This book was published by the Okinawa Prefectural Office.

Introducing the nature of Oodo Beach in Itoman City.

It has a reputation for meeting beautiful corals and tropical fish on this beach.

It is a famous tourist spot that many tourists visit.

The corals have been keeping so beautiful by the activities of a certain groupon this beach.

Coral transplant by children

Touma Child Nursery School

This photo was taken in Touma Child Nursery School when practicing coral plantation.

We planted corals with childrenduring two or three years on Oodo Beach.

Children can transplant coral in any place where the depth is shallow enough so the children could be standing at low tide.

It is a prerequisite that safety management is performed perfectly!!

What is the effect of increasing and growth coral?

I have experienced it in the past, so I would like to show you.

What happens when the number of corals increases and growth?

High technology be cultivated.

Photo of typhoon taken from satellite.

We have had very strong typhoons every year.

Due to typhoons, the transplanted corals disappeared, and the aquaculture facility collapsed.

Okinawa, is a good place to advance coral farming and transplantation technique.

Now we have experience using the above excellent techniques.

If you need those skills please contact us.

You can experience to go diving with us and planting corals together.

My profile

Photo of my diving style

I was born in 1956 in Okinawa main island.
At that time, Okinawa was a paradise plenty of wild life.
Many colorful juvenile fishes lived in tide pool near my house.
And many beautiful beaches surrounded the area.
This was also a paradise for children.
I played at the sea to catch fishes by hands and swam to the beach near my house.

The sea of Okinawa now has fewer corals and more desert-like places.

This is the great motivation for me: I try to save coral reef.

I don't want to say at the near future.
" The old days were so beautiful".

I will do increase the number of corals.

And I want to say!!
"About one- or two-decade years ago it wasn't as beautiful as it is now."

By promoting coral farming I want to see some day the beautiful and diverse reefs that I saw in my young years.
